Foreign Exchange Students Attending Area Schools

OSWEGO, NY - Strong support for foreign exchange students is being shown from the Oswego and Fulton high schools.

Principals Peter Myles and Dennis Dumas (respectively) have done a great job of accepting high school exchange students from around the globe in order for local families to be able to become host families, according to one local coordinator.

"These students are high honor roll students and many are scholar athletes. They are bright, competent kids who are following their American dream," according to local coordinator Linda Germain.

Host families are needed in all areas. If you would like more information on the program, or want to apply to be a host family, contact Germain at 216-6246 or 561-1068.

Djawad "DJ" Wan Dzahanurin is being hosted by the Wheeler family.

Marina Mataree is being hosted by the Mills/Laribee family.

Sarah Adamo and Robert Reeschke are both being hosted by the Niccoli family.

The Mills and Niccoli family will be repeat families next semester.

The Mills will host a girl from Germany and the Niccolis will host a girl from Brazil.

The Gardner family (new) will host a girl from Italy next semester.

The students can be half-year students, arriving in August and returning home in January.

Or, they can arrive in January and returning home in June.

They can also be 10-month students, arriving late August and returning home late June.

"I want to stress what a wonderful opportunity this is for families. One does not have to be a typical American family. Many singles and elderly host as well as families with small children," Germain said. "There does not need to be a high school student in the home."

These students come with their own insurance and spending money, she added.

Basically the host family needs to be able to supply room and board for the student. Many of these kids are handpicked in their countries, and screened extensively, so that only the best students are allowed to participate in the program, she pointed out.

They are typically high honor students with fluent English skills.
